This is Renin. She’s Canadian. The teachers loved her because she’s “clever and listens well to the teacher. She even obeys better than some of the Chinese kids in the kindergarten!” (When graduation ceremonies came around, she was chosen to be one of three little masters of ceremony.)
The blond hair couldn’t be helped (that’s a joke!), but true to the culture of the classroom, the teachers tried to stamp out a difference they hoped to fix: Left-handedness. “Use your right hand!” her teacher kept urging. “Right-handedness is much better for Chinese character-writing.”
Here’s Renin on National Day, dressed to the hilt to celebrate one of China’s most important holidays. It commemorates the 1949 founding of the People’s Republic of China.
